The 2008 Lineup

Gomez
Old 97's
Alejandro Escovedo

One of Britain’s most critically acclaimed bands of the past decade , Gomez has finally enjoyed some well-deserved success in the U.S. since the 2006 release of their fifth studio album, How We Operate. The Wall Street Journal called it the “Best Rock Album of the Year,” with the title track and the song “See the World” receiving significant radio airplay. The title track also became a staple on the hit TV series, Grey’s Anatomy, being prominently featured in the season finale and on-air promos. The quintet is noted for their far-ranging influences, top-notch musicianship, well-crafted songs, superlative stage presence, and transcendent live performances. Their most recent two studio releases, Split the Difference and How We Operate, have each been ranked among the Top 15 Albums of the year in the 2004 and 2006 XRT Listener Polls, respectively, with “How We Operate” ranked among the #10 Songs in both the 2006 and 2007 Listener Polls.

Talk about improving with age! Five Men in a Hut: Single 1998-2004 was subsequently released, a retrospective compilation of singles, rarities, and unreleased tracks.

One of the original standard-bearers of the so-called “Alt Country” movement, Old 97’s formed in Dallas in 1993, and based on their reputation as a great bar band, proceeded to put out a pair of indie releases, the second of which, Wreck Your Life, on Chicago’s acclaimed Bloodshot Records in 1995. The popularity of the group led them to a major label deal on Elektra Records for their next three albums, resulting in radio airplay on XRT and throughout the U.S. Their song “Murder (or a Heart Attack)” was proclaimed by Blender magazine as one of the best songs of all time. Frontman/lead singer, Rhett Miller went on to release several well received solo albums, and continued to play Chicago frequently, with our city being one of the strongholds for Old 97’s music through the years. The band re-entered the studio to record together in 2004 and recently released their seventh studio album, Blame It On Gravity, which includes the song “Dance With Me,” heard on XRT since the day it was released. The compilation, Hit By a Train: The Best of Old 97’s, was released in 2006.
