Hotel Rooms
Hotel rooms are my favorite! They are a great reminder to me that much of life can be placed squarely in the extreme camps of "nothing of great consequence" or "did I really do that?" I've stayed in rooms because my flight was cancelled and those are sad rooms where you barely make a dent in the bed and don't even use the shower. I've stayed in famous hotels when I had the kind of job that involved a lot of conferences and mini-bars and I've stayed in rooms where...well...the kind of rooms where afterwards you empty out your wallets to leave as much as you can for the maid 'cuz you feel so bad about the state you are leaving it in.
Stoli brought their now nationally infamous Stoli Hotel to Chicago this past October. I jumped at the chance to host a night for Chicago's queers to experience 20,000 square feet of drinks, music and yes...the blueberi room. There were lesbians I only ever see holding up the bar at Star Gaze that came out; gay men who I only see at swanky black tie affairs that came out; graduate students from University of Chicago that never go out; club kids, transfolks, sex workers, media reps, performers, oh, and lesbians who took the bus and rode their bikes which the door staff said was a first for one of these parties. That's my kind of town!
Yes, there were sexy scenes taking place in the rooms that for sure influenced the vibe of everyone feeling welcome. When you bring together different parts of the same community that is connected by so little at times sometimes you need help - lube and liquor - usually do it for me. Sure, Circuit Mom and I share the stage many times throughout the year -- but it is rare to see an audience like that night -- full of so many different parts of the community all having a good time.
Oh, and that blueberi room. Makes me wanna order one.
